My English Vocab
Just a few minutes ago, I went online to take a quiz to challenge my vocabulary. Well, the results were shocking but, more eye-popping were the words that came along in the quiz. In my twenty one years of life and education, reading newspapers, books, magazines, I have not come across many of the words that came along in that quiz man!
It really tells me volume of my vocabulary and a gentle reminder that I have much more work to do to increase my knowledge in English. Though many friends have said that my English is of some standard, I am currently way off the mark when compared to anyone from the States or England.
Time for some more book reading to increase my vocabulary, more thinking before I deliver my speech and reply back to the questions asked by anyone around me.
A few months back, two Marines, those who are regulars from the United States Navy, were chatting with me during the journey in the train. I could not even give a proper English sentence and even if I did, it took alot of thinking and effort before the words could even leave my mouth.
That speaks volume of how much my English standard has fallen since graduation from secondary school, as, there is no one to keep watch on the proper delivery of the speech and usage of the English language. Too much Singlish and in my quest to improve my mother tongue, Chinese, I seemed to leave my English to let it free fall. Time to pull back the standard I had before and to improve on it while I keep trying to forge ahead with improving my Mandarin.
